Extreme Heat and Wildfire Smoke: A Dangerous Duo (2026)

The intersection of extreme heat and poor air quality has created a hazardous environment across Raleigh and the Triangle region. This perfect storm of conditions has already prompted families to adjust their plans, seeking refuge in air-conditioned spaces and opting for indoor activities.

As temperatures soar, businesses offering cooling solutions are experiencing a surge in demand. However, as Robert Tighe, an associate professor of medicine at Duke University, points out, these measures provide only temporary relief from the heat and do little to address the underlying air quality issues.

"The double whammy of feeling more short of breath from both the heat and poor air quality is a significant concern," Tighe emphasizes. This sentiment is echoed by emergency responders who are bracing for an increased number of heat-related calls. Wake County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) has already been responding to an average of three such calls daily, with the number spiking to 15 on a particularly hot day in July.

Staten Young, Commander of Community Outreach for Wake County EMS, stresses the importance of hydration. "If you know you'll be outdoors, hydrate the day before. You can never overprepare," he advises. EMS crews are not only monitoring heat-related illnesses but also keeping a close eye on the impact of poor air quality, which can exacerbate respiratory issues.

Dr. Tighe recommends that individuals with pre-existing health conditions prioritize spending time in air-conditioned environments this weekend. Even those without underlying health issues should consider limiting outdoor activities and checking on vulnerable family members and neighbors. "High temperatures and air pollution can make people sick, and it's important to take these conditions seriously," he cautions.

This situation serves as a stark reminder of the interconnectedness of environmental factors and their impact on our health and well-being. It highlights the need for proactive measures to mitigate the effects of extreme weather events and air pollution, especially for those who are most vulnerable. As we navigate these challenging conditions, it's crucial to stay informed, take necessary precautions, and support one another during these trying times.
